Connection, Ieper

I make them more often; installations with strings in trees. I connect the branches of the tree with the ground from which it grew. You can think of the strings as streams of water or energy. It produces an intriguing image, makes people look at trees differently and has a meditative effect. I also made such an installation for the exhibition SPOREN (Tracks) on the fortifications in Ypres (Belgium), but in that case there is more depth in the work.

I had been to this region before and for me the history of the First World War was heavy; it came out of the ground, as it were. That was the inspiration for this installation. Because of course there is more than just history in Ypres. A large lime tree grows from the ground, the history, to the light. With the wires I amplify this. At the bottom I covered the ground and the jute threads with clay, on the top the threads are thinner, white, connecting the history with the light, the future, hope.

I posted a video of the installation on YouTube.

More works have been made for SPOREN with the meditative, with attention to the planet and nature. A beautiful exhibition, which can be seen until 2 October 2022.
